Rafters

Manchester wordsmith Antony Szmierek is set to dominate the sound of your summer, with the release of his brand new single ‘Rafters’. A dance-fueled banger, the song seamlessly blends propulsive beats with Szmierek’s signature reflective lyricism and flow. The song’s vivid storytelling evokes scenes reminiscent of Trainspotting, blending visceral intensity with infectious melodies that invite repeat listens.

Out today via his new label home, Mushroom Music/Virgin Music Group.

Speaking about the song, Szmierek comments,

we follow a single piece of confetti that falls over a gig and the stories that take place beneath it. People falling in love, thrown pints, flashes of weddings and birthday celebrations. So much can happen in the time it takes a little paper square to hit the ground”.

In only a short while, Antony Szmierek has captivated audiences with his thoughtful lyricism across rap, spoken word, and dance music. Hailed one of BBC 6 Music’s Artists of the Year for 2023, in the past eighteen months he made his television debut on Later… With Jools Holland, performed an entirely sold-out first ever UK headline tour and released two acclaimed EP’s ‘Poems To Dance To’ and ‘Seasoning’. He has had a string of A List singles on BBC 6 Music, a Maida Vale session for Future Artists on BBC Radio 1 and daytime support at the station as their Introducing Track of the Week. Last month he performed three incredible shows at Glastonbury Festival, with his live performance tipped by The Guardian and hailed a highlight by NME.

His lauded live show will be taken to yet more festivals this summer, including Truck and Latitude this coming weekend. Full date listings as follows:

What started as poetry performances on small stages led to skillfully crafted melodies to accompany his words, and from there more songs. Szmierek wrote words before songs; novels at first, of which he’s published two – but he realised what people wanted to take from them was smaller quotes, or soundbites. So, gradually his writing became shorter and shorter, boiling down into short stories. With his art, Antony joins a host of contemporaries whose skill for crafting melodies and lyrics translate beautifully into both songs and written works, for which he is becoming widely lauded as one  of the next great British songwriters.

What Szmierek does so well with his artistry is document incredibly specific details from his life, and others. It’s about making music that tells stories and makes him feel good. Having spent time working as a teacher throughout his twenties, he’s learned the value of communities, people and empathy “all of these things I value as part of my personality now, I learned while teaching”.
