Single Review: Slates – Hot Wings

HOT WINGS

There’s nothing quite like a band having the confidence to rip up the rulebook and start again, especially when they’ve already got plenty going for them but that’s exactly what Slates have done with their explosive new single ‘Hot Wings’, marking the beginning of a completely new chapter for the Leeds lads.

Now, this is a brave move when you’ve already built a seriously strong fanbase, been tipped as the next big thing and have plenty of momentum behind you, completely reinventing yourself is a hell of a gamble, sometimes you’ve got to take a few risks to get where you want to be and we’re absolutely behind the new era. Even dropping the ‘The’ from their name shows they ain’t fucking around, this is a band making a statement and they’re clearly ready to back it up.

‘Hot Wings’ comes flying out of the traps with a sound that’s a million miles away from playing it safe, we’re talking huge aggressive riffs, deep-funk grooves, pounding rhythms and a chorus that practically demands you get off your arse and join in. There’s a proper alternative rock and nu-metal flavour running through it, with shades of Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys but delivered with that unmistakable northern attitude.

The repeated “GET UP! GET UP!” hook is an absolute belter, bringing a rebellious, rallying-cry feel to proceedings. It’s loud, it’s punchy and it’s got enough attitude to get a festival crowd bouncing before they’ve even had a chance to finish their first pint.

Speaking of festival crowds, Slates have already been putting this new material through its paces, causing absolute carnage at La Mercè in Barcelona, Isle of Wight Festival, Truck and Y NOT? If you’ve seen the footage or been lucky enough to catch them this summer, you’ll know they’re not exactly a band who struggle to get a crowd going.

There’s clearly plenty more to come too, Produced by Ben Harper at Liverpool’s Motor Museum, ‘Hot Wings’ isn’t just a one-off experiment or a cheeky change of direction, it’s the opening statement of a much bigger plan with the band promising more of this unapologetic, heavier and more visceral sound.

Still only 21 years old (with drummer Cohen Hall just 18), the four-piece have already achieved more than most ever will. 2027 is looking like that massive breakthrough year, Slates recently signed to This Feeling Records in partnership with LAB Records and with a growing reputation, a seriously impressive live following and a 2027 festival diary already taking shape, there’s every reason to believe this could be the start of something massive.

The next stop is their biggest headline show to date at Leeds Beckett Students’ Union on November 28th. Spangled and LEAZES join them for what promises to be a big and sweaty night.

Reinvention doesn’t always pay off but there’s something seriously exciting about watching a young band take a risk, trust their instincts and go all in. Slates aren’t interested in standing still or simply giving people more of what they already know, they’re evolving, they’re turning up the volume and they’re doing things on their own terms.

If ‘Hot Wings’ is anything to go by, this new era will be one hell of a ride and we’re fully backing it.
