Single Review: Spangled – Made For Gold
PLUG IN, SHUT UP
There’s something about Spangled that tells you pretty quickly they’re not particularly interested in doing it any other way but their own.
The Manchester lot have been building some serious momentum, from selling out the 1,500-capacity O2 Ritz to tearing through their Small Town, Big Tour and now they’re back with ‘Made For Gold‘, the latest taste of their new EP ‘Plug In, Shut Up’.
‘Made For Gold‘ starts off with shimmering guitars that wouldn’t sound completely out of place on a Johnny Marr record, while there’s a darker atmosphere lurking underneath that gives the whole thing a proper post-punk edge. Then Spangled do what Spangled like doing best, throw the rulebook out the window and go absolutely fucking mental.
The track suddenly bursts into a frantic garage-rock monster, with Ben Johnson and Niall McGovern sharing vocal duties and absolutely hammering home one of those choruses that feels built for a sweaty room full of people shouting it back at the band.
There’s a bit of Viagra Boys, a touch of The Hives and a load of punk ‘n’ roll attitude. Ultimately, a very Spangled way of putting the whole bloody lot together.
The story behind it is equally Spangled, apparently, the song is about drinking rum and mango doubles while attempting to inflate a lilo in 30-degree Egyptian heat. Which, let’s be honest, sounds like exactly the sort of situation that could result in a decent tune.
What really stands out though is just how much fun the whole thing sounds, you can hear the chaos, the energy and the feeling of a band enjoying themselves rather than trying desperately to sound like the next big thing. There’s even a story of drummer Joe Kilroy’s dad Facetiming him mid-jam, Stella in hand, while watching ‘the box of toys’, a nickname he has given the band. That pretty much sums up the band perfectly.
The new ‘Plug In, Shut Up’ EP lands on November 27th via This Feeling Records in association with LAB Records. The fact that the vinyl has already sold out tells you anything, people are clearly paying attention.
With ‘B-Line To Bruges‘ and ‘Barracuda Cadillac‘ already showing off the heavier, more frantic side of the band, ‘Made For Gold‘ feels like another step forward. Not necessarily a reinvention but more like Spangled taking everything they already do well and turning the fucking volume knob as far as it will go.
They’ve already headlined stages at Isle of Wight and Truck, packed out a tent at Kendal Calling, toured France and clocked up more than 2.6 million Spotify streams.
Verdict: This is made for the live room. Turn it up, grab a beer and LET’S GET FUCKING SPANGLED.
