#1

DIY South Yorkshire band The Reytons, have shown what Rock and Roll really is by bagging the #1 album spot with their second album ‘What’s Rock and Roll?’.

The band pride themselves on being a do it yourself band and recently used the slogan “No Label, No Backing – All Reytons.

The album is the follow up to the band’s debut album ‘Kids Off The Estate’ which narrowly avoided to top 10 by peaking at #11.

‘What’s Rock ‘n’ Roll?’ Knocks fellow indie heroes Courteeners off the summit of the chart, who last week managed to bag the top spot with a remastered version of their debut album ‘St Jude’.

Through heavy touring, The Reytons started to build a big name for themselves through word of mouth, I’m not comparing but this is similar to the way fellow South Yorkshire lot Arctic Monkeys started to snowball. The Reytons tours have been getting bigger and selling out faster for several years now, so much so that half way Through their sold out tour early last year, they announced another to take place later that year in bigger venues so fans had more chance to catch them live. They even announced an incredibly huge gig at Sheffield’s Arena which is due to take place September this year, they managed to sell the standing section out in less than a day! Remember, this is all without a label and backing.

Recently frontman Jonny Yerrell told NME:

I don’t think it’s important as such to achieve it without a label. For us, it’s not an option,” Yerrell responded. “It’s more of an inspirational thing.

We’re proud that we’ve done it independently, and it’s just a reminder that you can do it. Because we’ve had so many doors shut in our face over the years that we’ve had to literally find different ways around things, make things happen our own way.

There’s no financial backing, we never started with any money. We started with very little money, if anything. We’ve had to work our way to where we are. The whole Reytons thing is just to say, ‘This is a community’, and I want everyone to feel part of that. And also feel like they can achieve it as well.
