On This Day: In 2001 The Strokes Released Debut Album ‘Is This It’

~ #OnThisDay ~

On this day (18 years ago) in 2001 New Yorkers The Strokes released their groundbreaking debut album ‘Is This It’.

During a time when Britpop was dead and buried but people were clinging onto the likes of Oasis, Stereophonics and Travis for dear life, it was all a bit Dad-Rock and the less we mention about the nu-metal scene the better. The Strokes released an album that would boot off a brand new music scene and kick-off an incredible next decade influencing the likes of The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand…  Indie music became huge again.

The Strokes were always a bit pissed in their early days and this combined with how unbelievably talented all the members were and how effortless they made cool look made people love them even more and made everybody want to pick up a guitar, a leather jacket and become one of The Strokes.

‘Is This It’ still remains a staple in every indie lovers favourite ever albums. The album which includes the singles ‘Hard To Explain’, ‘Last Nite’ and ‘Someday’, went on to reach #2 in the Offical UK Album Chart. The LP was beaten to the top spot by Slipknot and their album ‘IOWA’. ‘Is This It’ went on to become x2 platinum with over 600,000 copies sold in the UK and over a million sold on the US.
