Single Review: Courteeners – Plus One Forever
GOD BLESS THE BAND
There aren’t many bands who can bottle up that nervous buzz of falling head over heels quite like Courteeners. On ‘Plus One Forever‘ they remind everyone why Liam Fray remains one of Britain’s sharpest songwriters.
Landing ahead of the band’s upcoming ‘God Bless The Band‘ compilation, ‘Plus One Forever‘ is a proper arms-in-the-air indie love song, it’s full of awkward charm, honest confession and the sort of lyrics that’ll be screamed back from festival fields for years to come. Rather than hiding behind bravado, Fray leans into the butterflies, admitting he’s “falling in love” while questioning whether it’s enough. It’s vulnerable without ever losing that unmistakable Courteeners swagger.
The chorus is where it really hits though, “Can I be your plus one forever?” feels destined to become another classic Fray one-liner, balancing romance with the everyday realism that’s always made his songwriting so relatable. It’s the kind of hook that sticks after one listen and sounds tailor-made for thousands of voices in unison.
Produced by Liam Fray alongside James Skelly of The Coral, the track follows ‘The Luckiest Man Alive‘ and continues to prove there’s still plenty left in the tank. While the band prepare to celebrate 20 years since their first gig with the release of ‘God Bless The Band‘, ‘Plus One Forever‘ doesn’t feel like a nostalgic glance in the rear-view mirror, instead it sounds like a band still writing songs worthy of standing alongside the classics.
The compilation itself is getting the full collector’s treatment, available across multiple vinyl and CD formats, fans ordering directly from the band’s official store can also get hold of deluxe editions packed with bonus tracks, signed artwork and exclusive memorabilia. For the die-hards, there’s even a limited super deluxe box set of just 1,000 copies featuring a gold 3LP, 2CD, exclusive cassette, replica gig ticket, AAA pass and a special 7-inch of the iconic ‘Not Nineteen Forever‘. If you’re a lifelong Courteeners fan, this is the sort of release you’ll want on the shelf before it disappears.
