Single Review: Roulette – I Can’t Take It
I Can’t Take It
‘I Can’t Take It’ is the second single from Roulette, the young four piece from Grimsby consisting of Sam on lead, Ruby vocals and rhythm, Baz drums and Spen bass.
There is definitely progression from their more than credible first single ‘Sixteen‘ released earlier this year, this latest track that was the opening number of the bands set at the latest Docks Academy ‘Fresh Catch’ night turned heads that night and rightly so.
‘I Can’t Take It’ is more subtle and intricate without loosing the high energy sound of its predecessor. The mix is much cleaner with a good balance of guitars and rhythm section and a great vocal delivery from Ruby who sounds like someone with far more years of this behind her. The voice reminds me of another up and coming artist Melanie Baker who’s starting to attract a good following and climb up the line up on some of the indie events.
The lyrics are hard hitting describing a terrifying assault with no ability for defence – ‘I just can’t pick myself up off the floor’ – then the frustration comes out – ‘why do you do these things whey you know I can’t take it’.
It doesn’t matter whether this attack is physical, verbal or emotional – the message is the same to any bully and is delivered so powerfully with that tortured anger in the vocals.
The songs closes with a nice bridge with guitar leading into the final cry for help.
Looking forward to the next release from Roulette that will follow sometime in early autumn after studio sessions in September.
Check out Roulette doing a stripped down acoustic set in the VIP tent at Docksfest on 5th July followed by 28th August at The Yorkshireman in Sheffield where they will be back with a full set including some new material.
