In The Cut

The Bluetones are back and ‘In The Cut’ proves they’ve still got that magic. This three-track EP which is released 28th March is a bold, confident return that not only showcases their signature sound but also highlights a fresh sense of energy and creativity. It’s clear they’re not just here for nostalgia, they’re pushing forward with purpose.

The title track, ‘In The Cut‘, is packed with sharp arrangements, unexpected influences, and even a Funkadelic-inspired outro. It’s classic Bluetones but with a modern edge, blending melody and groove effortlessly. Frontman Mark Morriss describes the song as a reflection on life’s ups and downs, sometimes you just have to roll with it and come out stronger. That theme resonates in the music, making it a powerful listen.

Cheap Hotel‘ instantly transports you back to the height of the Britpop era, with a touch of soulful charm woven in. Effortlessly cool and laid-back, the track showcases Mark’s vocals at their finest, smooth, expressive and full of warmth. His delivery is especially striking on the line, “And never kiss and tell, at the cheap hotel,” adding a tender, almost nostalgic feel that lingers long after the song ends.

The EP closes with ‘Go Slow‘, a track that feels like a hidden gem straight out of ‘Return to the Last Chance Saloon‘. If that album is your favourite, this song will be an instant standout. With its infectious groove and unmistakable Bluetones charm, it fits seamlessly into their classic era while still feeling fresh and exciting.

What really shines through is the band’s chemistry. With the original lineup intact, their years of playing together gives the EP a natural flow, there’s an instinctive connection that can’t be faked. Following the success of ‘Drive Thru‘, which hit number two in the physical sales charts, this release feels like another step towards something even bigger.

With a new album set for autumn and a string of live shows starting March 26th, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for The Bluetones.
