Single Review: The Frowns – The Angel
THE ANGEL
Glasgow’s indie underground has a habit of throwing up bands that feel like they’ve already lived a thousand sweaty club nights before anyone outside the city clocks them. The Frowns are quickly becoming one of those bands and new single ‘The Angel‘ might be their sharpest statement yet.
The track wastes absolutely no time getting stuck in, jagged guitars snap into life straight away, built around a tight rhythm section that keeps things driving forward with that classic post-punk-leaning indie urgency. There’s a rawness to it that feels deliberate.
But what really sets ‘The Angel‘ apart from the band’s previous singles is how it leans a little harder on the emotional side, there’s a darker edge running through the track but it never slips into full gloom, instead it sits in that perfect middle ground where the mood pulls on the emotional strings just enough to drag you in. It’s the kind of tune that stops being background noise pretty quickly and before you know it you’re locked into it, letting the guitars and atmosphere wash over you while your mind drifts somewhere else entirely.
Vocally, the delivery carries that cool-headed indie swagger, sitting somewhere between detached and desperate as it rides the tension of the guitars rather than overpowering them. It gives the track a slightly darker atmosphere while still keeping that unmistakable indie energy bubbling underneath.
Musically, there are clear nods to the early-2000s guitar scene, the sort of bands that made tight, punchy singles their trademark but The Frowns keep it sounding modern rather than a retro imitation. The riffs are sharp, the groove is relentless and the whole thing lands with enough bite to make it stick long after the final note fades.
If their earlier releases hinted at potential, ‘The Angel‘ feels like the moment things really start to click into place. It’s confident, gritty and built for sticky-floored venues where the guitars ring louder than the conversations at the bar.
For a band still building their name outside Scotland, this single feels like another step towards that inevitable breakthrough, the kind that starts with word of mouth spreading from gig to gig. ‘The Angel‘ isn’t just another indie single, it’s the sound of a band that know exactly where they’re heading.
