Love Your Neighbour

In a career now approaching the 20-year landmark, The Rifles have become one of the UK’s most significant cult bands, their strong connection with their following leading to big headline shows including the O2 Academy Brixton and The Roundhouse as well as taking three of their albums into the Top 30. Now back better than ever, The Rifles share the new single ‘Mr. Sunflower’. It previews ‘Love Your Neighbour’, their first album in almost eight years, which follows on July 5th.

Mr. Sunflower’ is The Rifles at their feelgood best: bright sun-kissed indie-pop with swooning vocal harmonies, a hook that instantly embeds itself in your memory and a buoyant, optimistic spirit. While the song is specifically about guitarist Luke Crowther’s neighbour, Simon, it’s also a celebration of those people all over the country whose small acts of kindness make a difference to the community around them.

Vocalist/guitarist Joel Stoker says,

The song is about community and getting along and going out of your way to put a smile on the face of people who you see day in day out. It’s actually based on Luke’s neighbour, Simon, who grows his own sunflowers and when they’re ready hands them out to all his neighbours. I think we could all do with more Simons in our life.”

While The Rifles have been living happily ordinary lives since the release of their previous studio album, 2016’s ‘Big Life’, they have found a wealth of inspiration in some of life’s low-key stories. It provides a relatable edge that has inspired their recent singles, with ‘The Kids Won’t Stop’ observing the hectic hustle-and-bustle of family life and ‘Days of our Lives’ relishing the nostalgia for those moments which made you who you are today. It’s a theme that resonates both powerfully and playfully throughout the upcoming ‘Love Your Neighbour’ album.
