On This Day: in 2004 The Libertines released their self-titled second album

On this day, 30th August 2004 the likely lads, The Libertines released their eagerly awaited second album titled ‘The Libertines’.

The album is an emotional insight into the turbulent and shambolic love/hate relationship between the two frontmen and songwriters Peter Doherty and Carlos Barât.

Peter Doherty at the time was deep into drug addiction which only got worse and Carl was also fighting his own demons with the booze. The album’s artwork paints a thousand words of that time. The picture is taken by Roger Sargent at a The Libertines ‘Freedom Gig’ on 3rd October 2003 at the Tap & Tin Club in Chatham, Kent. The gig was an emotional return for Pete Doherty after he was released from prison just hours before the show.

Pete was sentenced to 6 months in prison for burgling Carl Barât‘s flat in revenge to being kicked out of the band due to his spiralling drug addiction, the burglary happened while The Libertines were away touring in Japan. Doherty stole items including an antique guitar, laptop computer, video recorder, CD player, mouth organ and books from Barât’s flat. The whole event is the subject of the tune ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’.

The self-titled album went straight into #1 in the UK Official Album Chart and elevated the band from being an indie cult band to UK stardom, despite this rise in popularity the tensions in the band were too much and the album would end up being The Libertines swansong album until the band reformed ten years later to play a gig at London’s Hyde Park.

Since the reformation in 2014, the band are still active on the live circuit, The Libertines released their third album ‘Anthems for Doomed Youth’ in 2015 and are currently working on album number four in their own recording studio at their Margate hotel The Albion Rooms.
